NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Another week yields yet another drug bust at Nashville International Airport (BNA).
It appears the baggage carousel at BNA is becoming a familiar arrest zone for alleged suspects smuggling drugs, many of whom come from the West Coast, according to investigators.
That was the case on Wednesday, Feb. 21 when BNA police said they seized 68 pounds of marijuana at the baggage carousel and took two men traveling from Burbank into custody.
Just a week later on Wednesday, Feb. 28, it was the same song, but different verse as a BNA
drug K-9 went around the luggage from a Southwest Airlines flight from Los Angeles. The dog sniffed out three bags containing almost 50 pounds of marijuana, according to police.
Investigators said the three suspects from that flight were from Memphis. They went to pick up their luggage when they were met by BNA police who took them into custody.
News 2 caught up with flyers Thursday, Feb. 29, who were amazed and also a little concerned at the brazen attempt to smuggle large quantities of drugs on an aircraft.
“It’s not the best feeling to know all of that because it makes you feel that whoever is on the other side is, they have intentions that are not the best,” said Jessica Varitek, a soon-to-be bride from Florida in town for a bachelorette party.
Another soon-to-be bride from Orlando, Brooke Green, added, “I mean, it is pretty crazy to think that people are willing to put something through their luggage to get out here where dogs are and police are, and that’s pretty crazy and willing to take that risk.”
“Well if they are hauling that type of stuff, what else are they hauling, bringing it into the city? There are all these fentanyl overdoses,” Varitek’s friend Sabrina Powers said.
The three suspects busted Wednesday were all charged with possession to sell and deliver.
News 2 reached out to Southwest Airlines for their response.
A spokesperson wrote: “We defer all comments to the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority and local law enforcement.”
