Wednesday marks one month until 4/20, or April 20, the unofficial holiday celebrated by marijuana consumers across the globe. Several Springfield businesses and organizations are honoring the day as the state surpasses its one-year anniversary of recreational marijuana legalization.
The story behind how 4/20 became the unofficial marijuana holiday is a matter of debate, but there are a few theories that remain popular.
Some believe it’s because 420 has, over the years, been used by police as the radio code for marijuana. Others tie 4/20 to Bob Dylan’s song “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” with its refrain, “Everybody must get stoned” and that the product of 12 and 35 is 420, according to PBS. But perhaps the more likely story centers around a group of California high school friends in the 1970s.
The friends, students at San Rafael High School in California, called themselves “the Waldos.” A brother of one of the friend’s allegedly grew marijuana in the woods near the school and was paranoid about being caught. He drew up a map of where to find the marijuana and gave it to “the Waldos” to harvest, according to PBS.
One day during the fall semester of 1971 at 4:20 p.m., “the Waldos” met after school, smoked a joint and headed out into the woods, according to PBS. They were never able to find the marijuana patch, but their code, “420” did seem to catch on. Through another brother of a friend, “the Waldos” began hanging out around the Grateful Dead, which is how many believe the slang spread.
Though the origins of the 4/20 story may be murky, April 20 remains a day of celebration among marijuana consumers. The News-Leader compiled a list of nine 4/20 events planned around Springfield and the rest of the state of Missouri. This list is not comprehensive.
