BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The 2024 Red Stick Cannabis Street Fair kicks off Saturday, May 18, in downtown Baton Rouge.
Founder of the Red Stick Cannabis Street Fair, Jessica Potts, said this event is more than just smoking some weed and hearing the stereotypical names many get labeled when using the product.
“Stoner, pothead, lazy, you just want to get high, that it’s a drug. That whole thing needs to stop,” said Potts.
Instead, the Red Stick Cannabis Street Fair is a way to shed light on the benefits the plant can have on the body.
Potts was diagnosed at 21 years old with multiple sclerosis, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system.
She said she tried every medicine to treat her condition, but nothing worked. That was until she found a plant that worked wonders, medical cannabis.
Potts said she’s the healthiest she’s ever been.
“None of that exists now. I’m not on chemo anymore. I’m not on pain medicine anymore. My only medicine that I use is medical cannabis,” Potts said.
Several House bills on marijuana are still pending or waiting for a hearing date.
“It was veterans who were pleading to the legislature, but really what pushed it and what got everybody to vote yes was mothers brought their sick children in, so children with cancer, epilepsy,” Potts said.
Potts said that more has to be done to protect patients.
“I’m glad to see that they’re starting to get some regulations to help patients, but a lot more needs to be done,” Potts said.
The Red Stick Cannabis Street Fair will be held at Galvez Plaza in downtown Baton Rouge. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 17 p.m. Saturday, May 18.
Attendees can participate in various activities and have the chance to win prizes, while also benefiting from up to 20 free legal expungements.
Expungements are put on by Southern University Law Center and will be done on the fourth floor of the East Baton Rouge Downtown Library. There will also be health and wellness with physicians.
A discounted medical marijuana card processing runs for $50. This is for processing medical marijuana cards, making access to treatment more convenient.
