Marijuana Warrior Randy Gregory

Somewhere, former Bucs running back Mike James is smiling.
The Bucs’ sixth-round pick in 2013 had a heck of a rookie debut. Finally, then-head coach Greg Schiano decided to give him the ball after a wave of injuries. And in his second start, James ran wild on the Seahawks for 158 yards on 28 carries in Seattle.
And that was against a Hall of Fame-caliber Seattle defense that finished the 2013 season ranked No. 1 in the NFL. It wasn’t the garbage run-stuffing unit Rachaad White ran strong against in Germany two years ago.
A week later, James was cruising early in the Bucs’ Monday Night Football game — 5 carries for 41 yards — but he broke his ankle on his final touch. It was a sad night at the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway.
James’s career also was broken that night, and he later explained that he became addicted to opiods after the ankle injury. In 2018, James became first player to file for a therapeutic use of cannibus exemption with the NFL.
It was denied, of course, and now that battle is raging on with another Buccaneer, free agent edge rusher Randy Gregory, who signed in with Tampa Bay in April.
Per Justin Wingerter of BusinessDen, Gregory sued the NFL and the Broncos under the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act. Gregory says he needs — and has been prescribed — synthetic cannabis to treat social-anxiety disorder and PTSD. But the NFL has fined him $532,000 for using it over the course of the past 15 months or so.
Joe doesn’t have much of an opinion on Gregory’s suit, other than to say this likely will be settled out of court with Gregory recouping some cash — and that Joe will get a laugh when the day comes that the NFL takes tens of millions of advertising revenue from recreational marijuana distributors.
