Child endangering: Sperry Drive

Police officers and fire department paramedics responded at 5:45 p.m. on June 25 to a report of a woman lying unconscious in the grass on Sperry Drive.

The unconscious woman still had a newborn infant attached to her via the baby’s umbilical cord. The baby was crying while lying face down in the grass. A good Samaritan, who spotted the woman while walking her dog, tried to wake the new mother several times before she revived. The witness notified staff at the nearby Westspring Inn to call 911 while she cut the umbilical cord and attempted to care for the baby.

The mom, a 42-year-old Cleveland resident, was staying at the hotel with a 35-year-old man originally from Westlake. The man, who identified himself as the father of the newborn, was in the nearby hotel room. He said that he was a drug user and explained that the baby came very suddenly and was born in the hotel room. He was cleaning up the room and could not explain why the mom walked out into the nearby lawn with the newborn.

The dad was wanted on a felony parole violation warrant from the Ohio Parole Authority as well as Westlake Police Department warrants for past drug possession and traffic charges, according to a police statement. He was arrested and taken to the Westlake jail. The mom and baby were taken to a hospital. Both the mom and self-proclaimed dad were charged with child endangering.
