Since you can pay with a QR code, why not just use the QR code to enter the station? There are two possibilities for the card to be returned: 1. The card is broken; 2. The exit you selected when buying the card is different from the actual exit you used.
The VISA free is a brilliant move by China. This is a much better way to counter the media lies and fake news with real tourist review. I even find out China has some 24/7 stores that has no cashiers. It is totally based on honor system. This would never work anywhere else in the world.
