  1. Hey jaren! Why does your newmilinium Tshirt have a scull on it? I don't want my nutrients to be affiliated with death. If I use some it's going to kill my plants..
    (JUST SAYING)

  2. Wow, what an amazing episode! As a Brazilian, I already knew about Terra Preta, but it’s always great to see this knowledge being shared with more people.

You know something fascinating? At the equatorial latitude of the Amazon, deserts are usually found, like the Sahara, which, despite having a massive river, doesn’t have a forest like the Amazon. What has been discovered recently is that the entire Amazon River region was actually cultivated by Indigenous peoples by hand for more than 10,000 years, and "Terra Preta" played an important role in this process.

Research has revealed that the region was once densely populated by 8 to 10 million people, dating back at least 8,000 years, and possibly much longer. The smaller populations observed by the first European settlers were likely the result of devastating epidemics, like smallpox, brought by colonizers, which spread rapidly across the basin, far ahead of their physical arrival in the region.

A significant part of this research focuses on evidence of how the landscape was modified. Since there weren’t many rocks in the region, Indigenous peoples found other ways to shape the land, such as cultivating nutrient-rich dark earth (known as Terra Preta), creating geoglyphs, building raised mounds, and managing domesticated forests. Studies have even shown that over thousands of years, certain trees were carefully selected and cultivated to provide essential resources for the people living in the forest.

Terra Preta has become a key subject in this new research. This incredibly fertile soil was distributed throughout the Amazon basin as far back as 5,000 years ago and stands as proof of the Indigenous peoples’ ability to transform their environment sustainably. Unlike much of the nutrient-poor soil in the Amazon, Terra Preta was deliberately cultivated over generations and maintained its fertility for centuries. This highlights the profound ecological knowledge and sustainable management practices of ancient Indigenous communities.

In 2023, a group of 30 researchers published an article that sheds light on how these dark earths were created. Based on archaeological excavations, ethnological studies, and interviews with the Kuikuro people from the Xingu region in Brazil, the study confirmed that Indigenous peoples intentionally produced dark earths with chemical compositions similar to those found in archaeological sites.

Other studies have also shown that many of the dominant tree species in the Amazon today are the result of careful cultivation and selection over about 12,000 years.
