JACKSON COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – North Carolina Senators Thom Tillis and Tedd Budd recently sent a letter to multiple federal officials raising concerns about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and Qualla Enterprise LLC’s efforts to establish operations to produce and sell marijuana in the area.
Last year, recreational marijuana was legalized on ECBI land after residents voted to pass the referendum created by the Tribal Council. Since then, ECBI and Qualla Enterprise LLC officials have worked to establish an operation to produce, cultivate and sell marijuana.
In the letter to federal officials, Tillis and Budd argued that the marijuana is being grown on a farm located off the Qualla Boundary along Cooper’s Creek and is separated from the reservation by a state road in Swain County. The letter also alleges that neither Qualla Enterprise LLC nor the ECCI Cannabis Control Board has a lab to test the safety or potency of the marijuana products.
