While Indianapolis was recently ranked one of the worst cities for marijuana use in the U.S., Hoosier stoners have a few other options for celebrating 4/20.
Here’s what to know.
When is 420?
420 Day is celebrated on April 20 (4/20) every year by cannabis enthusiasts and advocates.
While the exact origin of 420 becoming the codename for smoking marijuana, it has been used since the 1970s but became popularized by the Grateful Dead in the 1990s.
“Once an unconventional day, the day has become the rallying cry of those who seek to legalize marijuana for medicinal and recreational uses,” according to National Day Calendar.
Can you buy weed legally in Indiana?
No, weed is not legal in Indiana for medical or recreational use. You cannot purchase it or use it legally in Indiana.
A low-level possession charge is a class B misdemeanor possibly leading to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, IndyStar reported.
Several laws have been proposed in Indiana to change this over the years, but most never even get a hearing during legislative sessions.
Delta, hemp-derived products are legal in Indiana
While weed is illegal in Indiana, Delta products are legal to purchase and consume.
Hemp has been legal to sell since 2018 and has very low levels of Delta-9 THC, the psychoactive compound that gets people high, USA Today reported. But some manufacturers have found ways to increase the potency.
Some hemp products can deliver a mild buzz or none at all, but others are stronger, some even stronger than traditional marijuana.
Medical professionals and researchers have concerns about the unregulated products, especially with increased calls to poison control reporting those who take it getting sick.
Delta is legal to purchase in Indiana, but the products are unregulated, so if you’re going to celebrate 420 legally, do your research on the Delta products before taking them.
Delta products are available to purchase at smoke shops and gas stations around the state.
