Even as someone who shops for a living, I’ll admit: I’m daunted by the world of CBD and all of the products encompassed within it. From CBD oils and supplements to coffee blends and lotions, the reach of CBD seems pretty limitless. And while the ingredient can be infused in just about anything these days, whether or not it’s actually effective can warrant a whole other conversation.

In my experience, CBD isn’t a “one size fits all” option — it works splendidly for some people and yields minimal results for others. The research around the benefits of CBD is also mixed. While a systematic review of 34 studies published in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research in 2023 found that CBD may help alleviate insomnia symptoms, the researchers noted the existing research was flawed and said more evidence is needed before the compound can be strongly recommended.

I’d never had much success with CBD personally, until very recently when I tried Cornbread Hemp CBD Sleep Gummies ($40, originally $50), which is a natural sleep supplement that claims to help lull users into a better night’s rest — and all without the need for melatonin.

After incorporating these sleep gummies into my nighttime routine, I’ve seen a drastic transformation in not only the quality of my sleep, but my overall energy levels right when I wake up, too. Ahead, I break down what makes these sleep gummies such a great choice for me — from their natural ingredient list to the dosage options and more.

What I Like About the Cornbread Hemp CBD Sleep Gummies

Firstly, as someone who has long struggled with insomnia, I appreciate that these CBD gummies get the job done and actually help me fall asleep faster. The gummy supplements are infused with USDA organic CBD and up to two milligrams of THC per serving; full spectrum hemp extract contains ingredients like CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids, all of which the brand claims can help promote a better night’s rest.

Many of my own sleeping woes stem from struggling to turn my brain off and relax. And while more research is needed into the effects CBD and THC have on sleep issues, a small 2019 study of 72 adults in The Permanente Journal found that CBD helped decrease anxiety in 79 percent, and 67 percent saw an improvement in the quality of their sleep within the first month, though those results fluctuated over time. I suspect that’s part of the reason these gummies have been useful for me — they help quiet my mind so I can drift off my easily.

As directed by the brand, I take one gummy 30 minutes before my usual bedtime, and within 15 to 20 minutes, I can already feel my body relaxing and easing into a calmer state. Once it’s time to go to bed, I fall asleep almost instantly and — miraculously — will wake up the next morning without any feelings of grogginess or lingering fatigue.

In my worst sleep droughts, I’ve often used melatonin. While it’s been effective in some cases, I’ve also noticed some unusual symptoms. Because of this, I appreciate that these gummies are melatonin-free and that they’re made with natural ingredients I can feel good about taking, including organic valerian root, chamomile, and lavender.

What’s Worth Noting

While the sleep gummies are offered in two different doses (750 milligrams and 1,500 milligrams), a person’s individual CBD threshold will often vary. I’ve found taking this dosage 30 minutes before bedtime, per Cornbread Hemp’s website, to work great within my nighttime routine. But other users have actually found taking half of the supplement to be more manageable.

One reviewer on Cornbread Hemp’s site wrote: “These have been great for helping my partner and I get a good night’s sleep. I found that my ideal dose is a half gummy and my partner loves taking a full gummy. I love that we can have that flexibility with these and I love that there is no melatonin.”

That said, determining a person’s ideal CBD dosage is tricky, and what works for one person might not work as well for another. If it’s your first time taking a CBD gummy, it’s best to consult with a doctor that specializes in CBD administration in order to determine the best dosage for you. It may make sense to start with a very small dose — a quarter or half of the smaller dose gummy, for instance — and slowly work your way up.

Also worth noting: in a 2022 study in the Journal of Cannabis Research, researchers analyzed the CBD content of 80 products and found that more than half weren’t properly labeled and contained at least 10 percent more or less CBD than listed on the packaging. So you always want to look for a product that undergoes third-party quality testing. Cornbread Hemp’s products are third-party tested, and they post their lab reports verifying their ingredients and potency on their site.
