Cotton Hollow Preserve is closed until further notice due to safety concerns, Glastonbury officials said Tuesday.
According to Town Manager Jonathan Luiz, “town staff have witnessed marijuana smoking and alcohol consumption both in the parking lot and in and along the Roaring Brook. In addition, there has been cliff jumping and lighting of fires — campfires and grilling.”
Substance use or smoking are prohibited on the property, as are cooking, picnicking, swimming and camping, the town website says.
“The police have also been dealing with unregistered and/or uninsured motor vehicles,” Luiz said. “This past weekend, three cars fled after Glastonbury police officers attempted to pull them over. The fleeing vehicles threatened the safety of a police officer as well as civilians making their way to the recreation area.”
During the time the preserve is closed, town officials plan to remove trash and perform maintenance on the site “and develop public safety enhancements.”
According to a statement from the town, officials will likely reconsider parking arrangements, signage, hours of operation and public safety considerations while it’s closed.
Officials said the area will be monitored to ensure compliance with the order.
