Lincoln man sentenced for possession of a machine gun, marijuana

A 32-year-old Lincoln man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for possession of marijuana and a firearm.

On Friday, Senior U.S. District Court Judge John Gerrard sentenced Detrick Anthony Michael Smith to prison for possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in connection with the drug offense.

Smith, who pleaded guilty, will serve five years on supervised release following the prison term. There is no parole in federal prison.

On April 6, 2022, Lincoln police executed a search warrant at Smith’s apartment where they located almost 3,500 grams of marijuana and $11,624. Smith was home at the time of the search. The marijuana was divided into bags consistent with packaging for resale. LPD also found drug paraphernalia and a small quantity of cocaine.

Police also found a duffel bag in the bedroom closet which contained a Glock model 19, 9mm handgun with a loaded magazine and a Glock model 20, 10 mm handgun loaded with an extended magazine. Both handguns had an empty chamber. The Glock model 20 had been modified with an aftermarket piece, commonly referred to as a “switch,” which illegally modifies the gun to be able to fire fully automatic rather than semi-automatic. The modification was determined to be a significant factor in Smith’s sentence.
